Sensory Differences

Course Description

This course will also increase the student’s knowledge of autism specific approaches relating to this area and their ability to apply that learning within their practice.

The ability, through the use of the English language, to effectively and clearly communicate with others and participate in all elements of the course.

Required Text(s):
A hard copy of the Power Point presentation will be supplied together with any additional information sheets deemed applicable by the trainers.
Recommended Texts & Other Readings:
A list of recommended reading and websites will be made available to all delegates.

Course Requirements

It is recommended that the student brings personal resources with which to record notes during the course. Internet connection for students preferring to note taking by the use of tablets will be at the discretion of, and facilitated by, the host organisation.

Course Structure

This course is delivered by two highly experienced members of the Autism in Practice team employed by Wirral Autistic Society. It is based on a Power Point presentation with many opportunities for participation through discussion and exercises by the student group. It will take place either during a morning or afternoon session of two and a half hours with a short break in the middle. The courses commence promptly at either 10.00am or 1.00pm, finishing at either 12.30pm or 3.30pm but slight variations on this can be negotiated at time of booking. A short questionnaire or test will be offered at the end of the course for students to complete and submit to their line manager at their next supervision. This reinforces that learning during the course has been effective. The questionnaire is to be completed in the student’s own time and successful completion of which indicates that effective learning has taken place during the course. This can be checked by the employer through perusal of the course hand outs. An evaluation sheet giving the trainers feedback will be completed by the student. This will take place at the end of the training but within the time frame expressed.

Student Learning Outcomes

The student will gain basic knowledge and understanding of how sensory differences affect up to 78% of those on the autistic spectrum.

The student will be assisted in identifying further data related to autism through recommended reading lists and websites.

The student will demonstrate learning to line managers through completion of questionnaire/test. This can be checked by managers through examination of the handout material supplied during the course

  • To raise autism awareness of autism in the community
  • To inform and educate those unfamiliar with the condition
  • To highlight the positive attributes, characteristics and value that those with autism can bring to the wider community.

The student will attain successful course outcomes by a combination of the following activities during and following this course:

  • Attendance and participation in the course
  • Personal study of hand outs
  • Successful completion of the questionnaire reinforced through supervisory feedback
  • Greater ability in recognising and supporting those with condition through increased knowledge of autism and its effect on those on the spectrum.
